UNIT-3 Vocabulary:

  1. Three year rotation. –Kind of system to work the soil. This left only one third of the land fallow every year.
  2. Mouldboard plough. – Is a kind of ploughed what was used more efficiently.
  3. Hanseatic League. A merchants’ association who dominated The Atlantic and Baltic trade routes.
  4. Trade fairs- A Place where the merchants met to trade. The biggest fairs were held in the Champagne region of France.
  5. Bills of Exchange-System of money exchange where this was used as money is. Made unnecessary to carry money. The bills of exchange were afterwards exchanged for an amount of money.
  6. Ghettoes- The ghettos were neighbourhoods where only Jews lived.
  7. Moorish- Islamic people who lived in Moorish quarters, in Spain
  8. City council- Each city had its own government, which was directed by a mayor.
  9. Guilds- an Association of all craftsmen who had the same work, from the 12th century.
  10. Master craftsmen- The person who owned the workshops, the tools and the raw materials. Workshops were usually handed down from father to son. The masters ran and controlled the guilds.
  11. Journeymen- Person who was skilled craftsmen, he received a wage.
  12. Apprentices- Were young men who wanted to learn a trade. They lived in their master’s house and worked for him for several years. They did not receive any payment.
  13. Roman Law- Ancient Roman Law. The lawyers in that time restored the Roman law. Which gave much more power to the kings than traditional law?
  14. Parliaments- Assembly where the only people who were represented were the king, the nobles, the clergy and the city mayors

Female clothes in the 14th and 15th Centuries



The chemise (red) is a low-necked, long-sleeved undergarment. In this period, padded stomachs (blue) were fashionable. The corset is a short-sleeved garment that shows off the chemise. The houppelande (also green) is a voluminous garment with long, flaring sleeves. During this period, waistlines are high. The mantle is a long, semicircular or circular cloth fastened by a strap across the collarbone.
